Containerization has done much to help enterprises optimize infrastructural resources when deploying applications, enabling virtualization at the operating system level for better scalability, security, and efficiency.

And whenever the topic of containerization is brought up, Kubernetes is likely to be part of the conversation.

Kubernetes is an open source orchestration system that enables organizations to easily manage containerized applications at scale, building automation into scaling and health checks--all of which are particularly beneficial for enterprises that are managing thousands of containers.

As 2020 begins, Kubernetes continues to establish itself as the industry standard for container orchestration. Here are 5 stats that demonstrate the importance of Kubernetes in 2019 and beyond.

Over 87% of respondent companies are running container technologies, up from 55% in 2017.

In their 2019 Container Adoption Survey, Portworx and Aqua Security found that the use of containerization continues to expand, particularly as development methodologies shift toward microservice and micro frontend application architectures, and enterprises seek to embrace DevOps and enact continuous deployment.

Nearly 90% of those running containers are doing so in production, which is up from 84% in 2017.

62% of respondent organizations are deploying automation and orchestration initiatives, and 37% say they have automated application infrastructure.

Organizations are looking to build automation into deployment, particularly with regard to their application infrastructure.

Furthermore, F5 found that enterprises are seeking to implement developer-oriented solutions rather than network-centric automation.

From November 2018 to July 2019, the number of organizations using Kubernetes as their container orchestrator grew by 50%.

DZone reports that the usage of Kubernetes as the orchestration system of choice is increasing swiftly, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

The reason for this is that Kubernetes offers key benefits to businesses. Itenables digital transformation and is attractive to organizations who are moving to the cloud and migrating legacy applications to modern containers.

As of 2019, 77% of containers are run on Kubernetes.

According to Sysdig, this number actually swells to 89% if you count those on Red Hat OpenShift and Rancher, which are both built on Kubernetes.

Kubernetes has quickly become the de facto container orchestrator, accounting for the management of a vast majority of containers and serving as the foundation on which other platforms are developed.

In December 2019, 86,673 commits to the Kubernetes repository on Github have been made, and there are 2,390 active contributors.

Kubernetes has a significant open source community that continues to grow month over month.
