4 Resources To Help You Understand & Implement Micro Frontends

Tuesday, March 17, 2020 - Entando

Micro frontends are changing the way organizations are thinking about frontend development for enterprise applications, websites, and portals. The ability to empower individual teams with end-to-end decision making power over their given feature or functionality is increasing development agility and lowering barriers to innovation.

But with such a change in methodology, technical leaders are looking for resources that will help them implement micro frontends and the organizational changes that will follow.

So here are 4 key resources to help you understand micro frontends and implement them in your enterprise.

1. Cam Jackson’s Article on MartinFowler.com

Cam Jackson serves as Lead Developer Consultant at ThoughtWorks and has written and spoken extensively about how large organizations can scale their frontend development processes and practices.

As part of that, Jackson has written an insightful article about micro frontends at MartinFowler.com, which includes an explanation of their benefits, different integration approaches, a detailed example of how they can be implemented, as well as some challenges micro frontends present and how organizations can overcome them.

Read Jackson’s article here. Jackson also gives a helpful interview on the ThoughtWorks podcast that offers advice to technical leaders on how to manage teams who are leveraging micro frontends. You can access that interview here.

2. Michael Geers at Micro-Frontends.org

Michael Geers is a software engineer at neuland Büro für Informatik, a German e-commerce development consultancy company. Geers is passionate about design systems and web-performance. (And he was also wise enough to register the domain name of micro-frontends.org).

View Geers site here, which summarizes what micro frontends are and how they can be leveraged in an e-commerce environment. Geers also gives a keynote speech on micro frontends and their implementation, which you can find here.

3. Luca Mezzalira’s Micro Frontends Resource Page

Luca Mezzalira is the VP of Architecture at DAZN, an international sports streaming service, and he has been a vocal supporter of micro frontends. Mezzalira has produced an extensive amount of content explaining the proper contexts in which you should use micro frontends, as well as how to implement them.

Mezzalira has worked to compile his most helpful resources onto a Medium article, which he regularly updates. See his curated content list here, including information about his upcoming book on micro frontends. One particularly helpful resource is his Medium article entitled “I don’t understand micro-frontends.”
